Andre Wisdom could play for Derby again this season despite stabbing

Phillip Cocu says stabbing victim Andre Wisdom could decide to return for Derby this season.

But the Rams boss has promised to give the defender time to recover from the physical and mental wounds of being mugged.

Wisdom, 27, was released from hospital this week after an “unprovoked assault and robbery”in Liverpool

which Merseyside police are investigating.

And County boss Cocu has ruled the defender out of Saturday’s Championship visit by arch-rivals Nottingham Forest.

Cocu said: “He definitely won’t this weekend. I don’t know at the moment if he will play this season?

“Could be but maybe not, it is up to him and depends on his recovery . It was a very big incident and serious event.

“Not only does he has to recover from his wounds, he needs time for that, but also the mental impact from such an event. The moment he feels he is ready to come back and start training again, the door is open for him but without any pressure. We have to give him all the time he needs to recover.”

The defender was discharged from hospital in time to visit Derby’s squad on Wednesday before their 1-0 win at Preston.

Cocu added: “Everyone was shocked and it had a big impact on the team. When he visited us before we travelled to the stadium it was a big boost for the team to have a chat and it was very good to see him and see he is doing OK.

“Now he is discharged from the hospital and can go home.”

Merseyside Police said Wisdom was walking in Beaumont Street on Sunday in the Toxteth area of the city at about 04:30 BST when he was assaulted.

The defender has made 20 appearances this term to help County push for the Championship play-offs with six games left.
