Nobody is quite sure what to expect of Arsenal in the transfer market this summer.
Mikel Arteta’s squad is quite clearly in need of reshaping ahead of the 2020/21 season, but there have been numerous suggestions that the Gunners will have to make do with free transfers and loan signings as they feel the impact of the coronavirus
Nonetheless, Arsenal continue to be the subject of much transfer speculation, with a number of targets reportedly on the radar of the Emirates Stadium outfit. Will Arteta get the players he needs to point the club in the right direction again?
Here are three of today’s biggest and most intriguing Arsenal transfer stories.
Arsenal make move to sign former PSG defender with Luiz support
Arsenal are interested in signing Thiago Silva on a free transfer after the Brazilian’s release from Paris Saint-Germain, with David Luiz pushing for the move to happen.
Le10 Sport (as per the Metro) claim Luiz has put his former PSG teammate in touch with Arteta and is keen for the Gunners to sign Silva as the north London club look to strengthen their defence on the cheap this summer.
Silva played alongside Luiz during his time at the Parc des Princes, but will leave the French champions this summer following the expiration of his contract.
Everton are also believed to be interested in the 35-year-old central defender, with Carlo Ancelotti keen to coach the player he had at both AC Milan and PSG, and so Arsenal could face competition for his signature.
Gunners target always ‘dreamt’ of playing for Liverpool
Arsenal are reportedly interested in Wout Weghorst, but the Wolfsburg striker has admitted he has always “dreamt” of playing for the Gunners’ Premier League rivals, Liverpool.
The 27-year-old has been linked (via Sport Witness) with a move to the Emirates Stadium, with a £32million price tag slapped on the player by his Bundesliga employers, but Weghorst has opened up on his ambitions to play for Liverpool instead.
“I’ve dreamt of it since childhood. If I continue to train with full commitment, I think that opportunity will come,” he told De Telegraaf.
“Of course, something like that depends on several factors. You have to stay fit and a coach and club must see it in you, but apart from that you can create many things in life for yourself.”
Trippier sends message to Partey over potential Arsenal move
Former Tottenham Hotspur right-back Kieran Trippier believes his Atletico Madrid teammate Thomas Partey would be a good fit for Arsenal.
The Ghanian midfielder, who has a release clause of around £45m in his current contract, has been linked numerous times with a switch to the Emirates Stadium this summer and Trippier has spoken glowingly about the 27-year-old.
“I’d seen him play for Atletico but I didn’t realise how good he is,” Trippier told The Beautiful Game podcast.
“It’s unbelievable, his physicality, how he breaks up play. Technically, he’s got everything.”
Comparing Thomas to his former Spurs teammate Mousa Dembele, Trippier added: “He ranks as one of the best midfielders I’ve played with but Mousa is Mousa, he’s on a different planet.
“Even in training he’s just in cruise control. Ask anybody who has played with him and they’ll say Mousa Dembele. That’s how good he was. It was frightening. But Thomas is still very young and everybody loves him out here.”
