Chelsea boss Frank Lampard says that Mason Mount has ‘given him a problem’ ahead of Chelsea’s opening Premier League game against Manchester United
The 20-year-old has put in a number of impressive performances for the Blues during pre-season after spending last season on loan at Derby County, where he played under Lampard.
Following his brace against Reading last weekend, the midfielder once again showed his potential as the Premier League club came from two goals down to draw 2-2 against Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday.
After seeing Tammy Abraham score one penalty, Mount won his team a second spot-kick, which was converted by Ross Barkley.
Although Mount has yet to make a first-team appearance for Chelsea , Lampard admitted that the midfielder could force his way into his plans for the coming season.
“He’s done a lot,” said Lampard after the draw with the Bundesliga club (via the Mail on Sunday ).
“I’m really happy with how he’s training, how he’s playing and his status in the group coming back here.
“The players recognise quality instantly but they also recognise work rate and character — and Mason has all of those. He has given me a problem.
“Ross Barkley also had a good pre-season and Ruben Loftus-Cheek will be back later on. It’s good, as they’re all adaptable. It doesn’t have to be just one. They can play in a variety of positions.
“I couldn’t ask for more from what Mason has done.”
Chelsea start their Premier League campaign with a trip to Old Trafford next Sunday, before they face Liverpool in the UEFA Super Cup.
After watching his team recover from a poor first half and a two-goal deficit against Monchengladbach, Lampard said he was happy but admitted that he his side will need to up their game against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.
“I have a good feeling after today’s game,” added the Chelsea boss.
“I didn’t like the first half but the second half, with the chances we created, we should have won comfortably.
“It was a nice way to finish pre-season but we must stay focused as United in the Premier League is a different animal.”
