Liverpool’s Alisson wins Best Goalkeeper at 2019 Ballon D’Or awards

Liverpool’s Alisson has won the Best Goalkeeper award at the 2019 Ballon D’Or awards.

The Brazilian no.1 helped his team win the Champions League last season, and was awarded the gong at the ceremony in Paris on Monday.

Alisson received the first ever Yachine trophy from former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba who was presenting the prize.

He also ranked in seventh place in the overall Ballon D’Or award.

The 27-year-old played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s campaign, in just his first season with the club since his switch from Roma.

Meanwhile Alisson’s Liverpool teammate Virgil van Dijk finished as runner-up for the main Ballon d’Or award.

Liverpool’s Dutch defender was sandwiched between winner Lionel Messi and third-placed Cristiano Ronaldo – both of whom he branded “unnatural”.

Barcelona forward Messi has now won the award a record six times, one ahead of rival Ronaldo, while van Dijk was on the podium for the first time.

Fellow Liverpool stars Sadio Mane (fourth) and Mohamed Salah (fifth) made up the top five, but van Dijk admitted there were two players who were in a league of their own.

“It was an amazing year, but there’s a couple of players like that who are a bit unnatural,” said Van Dijk, of Messi and Ronaldo.

“So you need to respect greatness as well.

“I was close, but there was just someone a little bit better.

“I’m very proud of what I achieved last year with Liverpool and Holland, and hopefully we can do that again this year. But that will be tough with those guys around here still.”

Speaking of his record sixth win, Messi said: ““Ten years ago I received my first Ballon d’Or, guided by my three brothers.

“Today I receive my sixth, guided by my wife and children.”
