Jonny Evans has backed former Leicester City team-mate Harry Maguire to have a similar impact to Liverpool
The Red Devils made Maguire one of their top targets during the transfer window and finally secured his signature after agreeing a £80million deal with the Foxes.
It was a world-record fee for a defender, eclipsing the £75m the Reds paid Southampton for centre-back Van Dijk in January 2018.
Since making the move to Anfield, the Dutch international has gone from strength to strength. In addition to being named last season’s PFA Player of the year, Van Dijk helped Jurgen Klopp’s side to a Champions League triumph.
And Evans is confident that Maguire, 26, can have similar success with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.
“You can see comparisons in their games,” said former United defender Evans (via Sky Sports ).
“Both are great on the ball, and Harry has got explosive pace people don’t see. He is powerful and good in the air.
“Everyone will compare the transfer fees but it’s so difficult to judge transfer fees nowadays. We are all human and it is weird we get traded for money.
“In the transfer market it’s all supply and demand and things can go up and down at any moment. The most important thing is for him to be judged on how he plays.”
Despite joining United less than a week before the start of the new Premier League season, Maguire has taken little time to adjust to life at Old Trafford.
He made his debut for the club in Sunday’s 4-0 win over Chelsea and impressed with a composed display in the heart of the defence.
“I don’t have any worries about him there,” added Evans, who won three titles with United.
“He is tailor-made for Manchester United, it was a great move for him.
“He’s a player they needed. He’s got a really likeable nature about him.
“He will be a real hit there, he is a fantastic player.”
