Ozil to build his own brand as partnership with Adidas set to expire

Mesut Ozil is into the final few weeks of a seven-and-a-half year endorsement deal with Adidas, with his representative confirming that the contract won’t be renewed as the Arsenal star concentrates on developing his own brand.

There were reports in his homeland that the German playmaker had been dumped by the sportswear giant as they take stock of their contracts amid the financial uncertainty caused by the coronavirus

crisis.

But the player’s agent Erkut Sogut insists that the deal hasn’t been cut short, and is instead just coming to a natural conclusion as Ozil seeks to promote his personal M10 brand.

“There is no termination,” Sogut told The Athletic.

“The contract is running out. It’s like any other contract agreement or contract you have with a club — like if Mesut’s contract runs out with Arsenal next year, Arsenal wouldn’t say one month before they were ‘dumping’ him.”

Ozil and his advisors recently launched an online shop for the M10 brand, which sells branded sportswear and features a cartoon figure of Ozil in social media advertisements.

It is not yet clear whether M10 will eventually produce football boots, meaning that Ozil could be seen on the pitch in a variety of different boots once his contract with Adidas ends at the end of the month.

Indeed, Sogut says his client is looking forward to trying out a range of different and “classic” boots once he becomes free to do so.

“After this contract, he doesn’t have to wear something just because the sponsor says,” continued Sogut.

“Maybe he’ll wear Puma for a couple of days, then one day, Nike; maybe a brand from Indonesia or Malaysia. Who knows?

“It’s up to him now. There are some classic boots from the past he wants to wear.”
